Replacing gutters
Gutters are only noticed when things go wrong. Water overflowing down the facade, damp patches in the cavity, or a sagging gutter that catches leaves but no longer drains rain.
Smienk Dakwerken repairs and replaces gutters and downpipes throughout the Netherlands, using its own skilled craftsmen and sustainable materials.
Signs that your gutters need attention
Don't wait until the water overflows the edge. These are the most common signs that something is wrong:
Overflowing gutters when it rains
If water splashes over the edge instead of draining through the downpipe, there is a blockage, an incorrect slope, or insufficient capacity for your roof surface.
Sagging or loose gutters
Gutter brackets can rust, break, or come loose. A sagging gutter is no longer straight and drains water poorly, or allows it to run behind the gutter down the wall.
Rust, cracks or leaky seams
With steel and cast-iron gutters, rust forms that eats through the wall. With PVC gutters, seams can come loose due to temperature fluctuations. Both lead to water leakage along the facade.
Moss and plant growth
If plants are growing in your gutter, water has been standing still for a long time. This indicates poor drainage and can significantly increase the weight of the gutter.
Damp patches on the facade or interior wall
Water running down the outer wall eventually penetrates the cavity. This manifests as damp patches on the inner wall, mold growth, or peeling paint on the facade cladding.
Gutters: What we do
Cleaning gutters
We thoroughly clean clogged gutters caused by leaves, moss, and dirt. After cleaning, we inspect the slope, brackets, and seams.
Repairing gutters
Sealing leaking seams, replacing loose brackets, repairing minor damage to PVC or zinc. For targeted damage, repair is often the most cost-effective solution.
Replacing gutters
Is the gutter worn out, cracked, or too small for the roof surface? Then we replace the entire gutter, including brackets, corner pieces, and end caps. We accurately measure the slope so that water always flows to the downpipe.
Installing or replacing downpipes
A properly functioning gutter has a downpipe with the correct diameter and a proper connection to the drain. We install new downpipes or replace damaged ones, including the mounting brackets on the facade.
How much does it cost to replace gutters?
The costs depend on the number of linear meters, the chosen material, and any additional work on brackets, downpipes, or cladding. PVC is the most affordable choice. Zinc and aluminium are higher in price but also last significantly longer.

Frequently asked questions about gutters
For a home with trees nearby, we recommend having the gutters cleaned at least twice a year, preferably after autumn and before summer. Without trees in the immediate vicinity, once a year is usually sufficient.
Cleaning a low gutter is something you can do yourself, but we advise against inspecting the gutter from a ladder if you are not used to working at heights. Moreover, you can easily miss leaky seams or loose brackets that a professional would spot.
That depends on your home and preferences. PVC is practical and affordable. Zinc is more durable and suits classic homes better. Aluminium is a good middle ground. We would be happy to advise you based on your situation.
We always discuss that in advance. In many cases, it makes sense to replace the downpipes when replacing the gutter, especially if they are made of the same material and are of the same age.
Yes. We work on homes as well as commercial properties and outbuildings such as garages and sheds.
