All about bitumen roofing

Bitumen is a classic material for flat and slightly sloped roofs. It consists of a blend of petroleum products reinforced with polyester or fiberglass. Due to its waterproof properties and strong adhesion, bitumen remains a popular solution for both new construction and renovations. Application is usually done with a torch, which fuses the material firmly to the substrate.

Bitumen or EPDM: what's the difference?

EPDM is a relatively new choice, made from synthetic rubber. Bitumen, on the other hand, has proven itself robust and reliable for decades. Bitumen is applied in sheets. This creates seams, but with the right techniques, these remain waterproof for a long time.

A key difference lies in the processing. Bitumen requires heating, which requires skill but also results in an immediate, strong bond. EPDM is usually cold-bonded and is therefore easier to use on simple roofs, but less suitable for complex details. There are also differences in terms of lifespan: while EPDM is known to last 40 years, bitumen offers an average of 20 to 25 years of protection. Bitumen is, however, more affordable to purchase and quicker to repair in the event of damage.

Can you walk on a bitumen roof?

Yes, that's perfectly fine. Bitumen is strong enough to withstand normal loads, such as maintenance work or inspections. For more intensive use, such as a roof terrace, it's wise to apply additional protective layers, such as tiles or a walkway. This will keep the roof covering in good condition for longer.

How long does bitumen roofing last?

A properly installed bitumen roof lasts an average of 20 to 25 years. Factors such as the quality of the material, the roofer's expertise, and regular inspections ultimately determine its lifespan. With timely minor repairs, a bitumen roof remains reliable and waterproof.

How thick should bitumen be?

The standard thickness of bitumen roofing membranes is around 4 to 5 mm. For applications requiring extra strength, such as roof terraces or intensively used commercial roofs, thicker or double layers are recommended. The correct construction not only ensures a longer lifespan but also increases resistance to mechanical damage.

Are there any disadvantages to bitumen?

Bitumen requires maintenance. Exposure to sun, frost, and temperature fluctuations can cause the material to dry out or develop small cracks over time. Regular inspections and minor repairs prevent larger problems. Furthermore, open flames are required during application, which requires specific safety precautions. However, experienced roofers are fully equipped to handle this and ensure safe application.

Bitumen is sensitive to aging, but when applied correctly and maintained, it provides years of reliable protection against the elements.
